Kathy’s Healthy Nut-free Trail Mix with Granola

One Degree Organics Kathys Trail Mix

Whether you take it to fuel hikes and outdoor adventures, pack it as a snack for picnics or road trips or send it with a sandwich in your kids’ back-to-school lunch, Kathy’s Healthy Nut-free Trail Mix with Granola is bursting with nutrition—and delicious variety!

Every excellent trail mix recipe calls for two things:

  1. A sweet-savory and crunchy-chewy assortment of flavors and textures to make every handful delightfully different; and
  2. A satisfying blend of portable proteins and carbohydrates you can carry to eat on the go.

And Kathy’s Healthy Nut-free Trail Mix recipe has this covered on all counts! Crunchy seeds packed with protein and granola clusters pair with cereal stuffed with the whole grain goodness of sprouted oats. Chewy raisins, tart cherries, and other dried fruits contrast decadent dark chocolate chips.

The result? A wholesome and hearty mix sure to satisfy kids and grown-ups of all ages.

Why Nut-Free Trail Mix?

Most trail mixes are nut-based. To make her recipe safe for kids to take to nut-aware schools—and allergy-friendly for snacking with friends—Kathy’s Healthy Nut-Free Trail Mix with Granola trades traditional peanuts, almonds, and other tree nuts for sunflower and pumpkin seeds.

And with One Degree Organics certified gluten-free granola and cereal in the recipe, this nut-free trail mix is safe to share with anyone who tags along or crosses your path on your family’s next adventure.

Ingredients

For the 3-Seed Trail Mix Base:
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup pumpkin seeds
3 Tbsp chia seeds (optional)
2 Tbsp water
Salt (to taste)

For the Healthy Nut-free Trail Mix with Granola:
1 package (11 oz/312g) One Degree Organics gluten-free Sprouted Oat Quinoa Cacao Granola
1 1/2 cups One Degree Organics gluten-free Sprouted Oat Honey O’s Cereal
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips
1 cup dried tart cherries
1/2 – 1 cup dried golden berries or dried apricots

Directions

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.

In a large bowl, stir together sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, water and salt until everything is evenly damp.
Place on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove mixed seed base from oven and allow to cool.
Meanwhile, wipe your large bowl dry and mix remaining nut-free trail mix ingredients together, taking care to leave granola clusters intact for easy snacking.
When the 3-seed trail mix base is fully cool, add to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and stir gently until well combined.
Transfer to an airtight container, and portion into your favorite portable containers or reusable snack bags as needed.

Tips

  • Treat yourself to chocolatey flavor three ways—swap in our Sprouted Cacao O’s for the cereal portion and measure your vegan dark chocolate chips with your heart instead of a measuring cup. (Just make sure to keep it cool to avoid a melted mess on sunny summer trips!)
  • Not the world’s biggest chocolate fan? Trade the Quinoa Cacao Granola for our Sprouted Oat Vanilla Chia Granola—or your favorite One Degree Organics granola flavor—skip the chocolate chips and double the raisins, or add an extra scoop of dried cranberries or another dried fruit you love.
