Oats

At the heart of our Sprouted products lies a secret ingredient that truly makes a difference: our quality gluten-free oats.

Today, we are excited to introduce you to the dedicated farmers behind our exceptional grains—Peter and his son, Joseph. Together, they work alongside two other team members to manage several farms in the picturesque River Valley area of Northern Alberta.

Peter has been a farmer his entire life; his father was a farmer, and his grandfather was a farmer as well. Now, he is passing down his knowledge to his son Joseph, who works alongside him. This lineage represents four generations of farming and counting.

Before acquiring his current farm, Peter worked with a partner in La Crete, where he practiced conventional farming. He mentioned that although he was breaking even and enjoyed farming there, something about conventional methods didn’t sit right with him. As he learned more, he transitioned to organic farming and began to experience the benefits that made him never look back.

Peter has been an organic farmer since 2007. Both Peter and Joseph acknowledge that while conventional farming is easier, organic farming is far more rewarding. Their farms utilize a unique comb cutter from Sweden that effectively removes weeds while preserving the oat plants-an innovative method that avoids chemical sprays.

The oats are typically planted in mid-May and harvested in September; they thrive in conditions characterized by plenty of sunshine and a balance of cool, wet weather.

Oats have become Peter’s favorite crop to grow. Although he has experimented with flax and peas, he notes that peas struggle to thrive in their conditions. To enrich the soil, they plant faba beans, known for their nitrogen-fixing properties, and continuously explore new crops to enhance soil health, including the use of alfalfa pellets, which are planted alongside the seeds to naturally boost nutrients.

Peter consistently achieves impressive yields, ranging from 100 to 150 bushels per acre on dry land. This year, they hope to reach close to 100 bushels per acre, but like all farmers, they are at the mercy of the weather. With growing consumer concerns about food purity, transparency has never been more critical.

Stan emphasized the importance of transparency in food production to Peter and Joseph. He explained that our brand uses QR codes to trace ingredients back to their source, further enhancing consumer trust. In every grain comes the story of Peter and Joseph, reminding us of the significance of sustainable farming practices and the positive impact of organic methods on both our health and the environment.

We take pride in the oats sourced directly from Peter’s farm in Alberta, and we firmly believe in their quality—the proof is in the taste. Try our Sprouted Rolled Oats and savor the goodness of clean, certified organic, glyphosate-free foods that have been grown with your family’s health in mind.
