Khorasan Wheat
Deakin Farms
Khorasan may be a term that’s unfamiliar to many, but in the realm of grains, it represents a uniquely powerful option packed with nutritional benefits. That’s why we have chosen to transform this exceptional wheat into Sprouted Flour. Here’s the story behind this remarkable ingredient.
What is Khorasan Wheat?
Khorasan wheat is an ancient variety, like emmer, einkorn, and spelt, that has remained largely unchanged by modern breeding practices over the centuries. One of its standout features is the size of its kernels, which contributes to its unique characteristics. 1
At the core of One Degree Organic Foods are the dedicated farmers who supply us with top-quality ingredients that are safe and nourishing for your family. We are committed to transparency, ensuring you know exactly where your food comes from. Today, we want to connect you with the source of our Sprouted Khorasan Flour—Deakin Farms.
Deakin Farms is family-owned by a passionate husband-and-wife team, Michael and Emily Deakin in Montana, however, the farm was not always based here. The original Deakin Farm was established in 1929 by Ed and Leah Deakin (Michael’s parents) in Blue Creek Valley, Northern Utah. Michael grew up farming organically in this vibrant valley, learning from his parents the value of nurturing the land and the satisfaction of eating what you grow.
In 2018, after welcoming two sons into their family, Michael and Emily moved to northern Montana from Utah, where they purchased farmland from the Gordan and Marge Matheson family. At the time of purchase, the land had been farmed conventionally; however, Michael and Emily were determined to transition it to organic practices, a journey that required immense dedication, knowledge, and patience.
The certification process for organic farming takes three years of strict adherence to organic practices. By 2021, Deakin Farms proudly became officially certified as an organic farm. Michael and Emily are deeply committed to the environment, employing sustainable, plant-based methods for cultivating their clean grains.
Currently, Deakin Farms cultivates certified organic grains and pulses across 3,000 acres. Their mission is to simplify the process of delivering organic, healthy food directly from the farm to your table. At One Degree Organic Foods, we take pride in sourcing our organic Khorasan wheat from Deakin Farms in Montana and are eager to share more of their inspiring story with you.
