Organic farming is a craft that requires passion, dedication, and years of hard work, qualities that our farmer, Herman, has truly mastered. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Alberta, Herman operates an organic farm and has for over a decade.  

During our recent visit to Alberta, Herman guided us through the lush field of his farm, sharing its rich history and the reasons why he decided to embrace organic practices. Interestingly, Herman credited us with reigniting his love for oats. After years of discomfort, which made him shy away from oats, he discovered our clean oats and now enjoys them daily without any discomfort. 

Herman’s farm, rich in organic practices, is also a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including moose and elk, which bring him immense joy. To maintain soil health, Herman employs sustainable techniques such as crop rotation. This method is vital as certain crops can deplete specific nutrients from the soil, while others contribute elements like nitrogen. The knowledge Herman has gained over the years by working closely with nature has deepened his understanding of what the land requires to grow high-quality crops. Herman emphasizes the importance of soil health, proper pH levels, and strategic crop rotation. To enhance soil nutrients, he cultivates alfalfa, also known as lucerne, a perennial flowering plant prized for its benefits to soil vitality. 

Weather is a critical factor in cultivating healthy crops, and farmers often face challenges in safeguarding their harvests. Herman pointed out that while excessive rain can harm his crops, prolonged dry spells can degrade soil quality.  

Like many oat farmers, Herman also faces challenges with wild oats, compounded by unpredictable weather conditions. He remains hopeful for ongoing community support and collaborative efforts to sustain organic farming. One of his greatest joys is watching his son learn the intricacies of farming, as he aspires to pass down this legacy.
